Descriptive data were collected about the homes and the water systems. Physicochemical and microbiological analyses included investigations for amoebae and Legionella in hot, cold, and mixed water. Legionella were counted by plate culture and solid phase cytometry with immunofluorescent labelling. The prevalence of Legionella by plate culture was 5% in hot water and 5.6% in mixed water (threshold 1000 CFU/L – CFU: Colony forming unit); it increased to 41% in hot water, 52% in mixed water, and 53% in cold water (threshold 1000 CFU/L) when assayed by immunocytometry. Factors associated with the presence of Legionella were the origin of the water (surface) (OR=38), presence of amoebae (OR=5.7), and presence of a water softener or filter (OR=11.1). Only the association with surface water was significant.
