摘要：The colonel took command of the 1st Battalion, 50th Infantry, in Viet- nam in Ju ne of 1970. Headqu artered at Phan Thiet, the battalion, li ke the times, was ¡ unusual. It was an inde- pendent mechanized infantry unit, one of the very few in country. Not at- tached to any of the glamorous divi- sions, it had been formed too late for World War I and fought in World War II, but it was not, apparentl y, where any ambitious officer would choose to serve. Low on the priority list for sol- diers and supp lies, its p rimary mis- sion was to safeguard the critic al Highway 1 along the coast in the II Corps Tactical Zone
