摘要：This paper aims at analysing the oral short-story O Afilhado do Diabo, recorded in t he antho log y Contos Tradicionais do Brasil (2001) by Camara Cascudo. Firstly, the article d iscusses the import ance of both Oral Tradition and Poetic Performance and ho w these two affect and transform everyday experiences and ways of life, grounded on the st udies of Paul Zu mthor (1985), Gyslane (2005), Hamp até Ba (1985) amo ng others. Mo reover, the int rinsic aspects of popular cu lture is t ackled taking int o acco unt how the sho rt-story operates as literary device that creates a locus of tensio n, which in turn produces a critical reflexio n o f reality. Finally, a critical analysis of the short story is proposed indicat ing that poetic wo rd, alongside with the pot ent ial for recreation within the perfo rmatic act , engenders the fundamental su bject ivity of human beings inasmuch as it allows language t o acquire new layers o f meanings as it renders new forms to express reality through abstract and symbolic means
