摘要:The prese nce and role of women in the economy of the Cross River a rea during the colonia l period has rema ined largely unstudied by historia ns. This is despite the fact that both in terms of their numerica l strength and economic importance, women's role in the Cross River a rea deserves attention. The present paper argues that through their colle ctive and individua l ac tivities, the wome n a s mothe rs, farme rs, tra ders, manu fact ure rs a nd contractors built enough economic power to contribute significa ntly to community, state and na tiona l developments. This wa s despite the fa ct that during the colonia l period, the people's efforts and resources were not used for the development of their a rea but, ra ther, exported to the metropolitan c ountry, thanks to those government policies that were designed to further the cause of colonialism. And since it was reasoned that a woman's pla ce in the society wa s the home, the c olonia l gover nment ne ver thou ght in ter ms of enc our ag ing the w omen to d evelop th e ir potentia ls throu gh its a dministra tive a nd ec onomic syste ms. N or w as it deeme d e xpedient by gover nmen t to integrate the women into the development process of their fathe rla nd. T he women's re action took diverse forms, including acts of violence a nd self-help development efforts, in order to fa ce the cha llenges of the period. With the ir economic power , the w omen were we ll place d to ac tively participa te in the development of the a rea now called Cross River State, and the country, N igeria .
