摘要:The present paper is a compilation of data published since 1972 up to date, on the presence and levels of toxic heavy metals (Hg, Pb, Cd and Cr) in sediments, water column and benthic organisms (Crassostrea virginica) from coastal areas in the Gulf of Mexico (specially in the States of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Tabasco and Campeche) and Mexican Caribbean (Quintana Roo). It is noticeable that the concentrations of metals analyzed had been increasing continuosly; thus, the results of papers reviewed shown that Pueblo Viejo Lagoon and Coauacoalcos River (Veracruz), the Ilusiones Lagoon (Tabasco) as well as Terminos Lagoon (Campeche) are the areas where Hg and Pb have been detected in high levels. In contrast and based on the scarce publications reported, the mexican Caribbean shows that the heavy metals are at trace levels; therefore, considered as a free pollution area, rnainly due to the absence of industrial activities in its nearby.
