摘要:Gas chromatography analysis for the identification and quantification of sterols were conducted in sediment samples from the estuary of the Coatzacoalcos River and Ostion Laggon, Veracruz, México. Cholesterol, ergosterol, stigmasterol, lanosterol, β-sitosterol were identified in addition to coprostanol and cholestanol which are chemical markers of faecal hurnan pollution. The results show a higher concentration of sterols in the Coatzacoalcos River compared with data reported previously, by other authors, in the Port of Veracmz and Mazatlan Harbour; but lower than the concentration in the Clyde Gtuary, England and New York Bay, USA. Likewise, Ostion Lagoon presents higher levels of sterols than the Coatzacoalcos River being an indication of the poor circulation inside the lagoon associated with the human discharges from fishmen living in nearby settlements.
