Weh Island, in the northwestern end of Indonesia, has a natural good harbor, Sabang, where sailers had been longing for wind in the sailing ship age. The harbor which was the fualing base and the free port for the steamers to supply coal and water in the mid nineteenth century. That is why, Weh Island had been built in touch with foreign cultures and powers, and it had ups and downs many times afterward. So far only few studies have been done on this district, which has interested me to touch upon the regional structure of this area and to throw light upon its change by recent sketches of this island. Trade of late years has had close connections with Asian country. Recently some of the functions of Sabang port have been shifted to Balohan, Krueng Raya or other ports. Although the population of this island had increased rapidly since Sabang became free port, that of this area dose not decrease in spite of abolition of free port system. It seems reasonable to suppose that this situation comes from the encouragement of industrial development. Islamite Aceh has a large population in this island. The primary industry population is overwhelmingly large. From the above mentioned circumstances together with excellent natural environment, I consider that Weh Island should prompt tourism. In particular, transformation of international airline, expansion and completion of airline development of service industry and of traffic system by means of foreign capital.
