The failures in structures often develop from small cracks which initiated at the stress concentration parts such as structural discontinuity, welding toe of component etc. Though strain gauge instrumentation is usually applied to the stress measurement at such parts, this method requires considerably complicated procedures and preparing time. Recent advances in the infrared technology have enabled to develop highly sensitive non-contacting instruments, for instance thermoelastic stress analysis. This paper presents the results of some basic experiments for stress measurement using the thermoelastic stress analysis. The system produced stress maps which indicate the stress concentration around notches in test specimens and bracket end in structural model. The experimental maps showed well agreement with the results from F. E. M. or strain gauge measurements.
