    This report is the second part of serial experiments which are being made to survey the effect of welding sequence on transverse shrinkage and residual stresses. In this report the analysis about the part of transverse shrinkage of 4 th series of experiment of which. main object is the comparison between multilayer and block welding sequence is treated. The size of specimen (slit type) and welding conditions were the same as what were used in the preceding serieses. The welding sequence applied for each specimen is listed. in Table 1. The measurement of transverse shrinkage was performed by a measuring machine after the welding of each layer. The results obtained so for are summarized as follows : 1) Form of Shrinkage The form of shrinkage for each specimen is shown in Fig. 1. It becomes considerably uneven when the block welding sequence is applied, and on the contrary, far even when the multilayer welding sequence is used. These problems were analysed using the “unfairness index of shrinkage” δ defined by Eq. (4) * * Refer to Appendix of this report concerning with the definition of δ and U . There exist some correspondences between the theory of inherent stress and aerodynamics. As shown in Fig. 2 the value or δ gradually decreases as the progress of welding, especially when the multilayer welding is applied. This phenomenon seems to be attributed to the tendency of approaching to the form of minimum strain energy in manual welding. When the block welding sequence is adopted, the larger value of δ is obtained than the case of multilayer welding. However, the value of mean shrinkage decreases by the use of block welding sequence. The combined effects of these two factors have been.analysed using the “apparent shrinkage energy” U defined by Eq. (4). The value of U decreases by the use of block welding sequence, as shown in Fig. 3. Consequently, the block welding sequence seems to be a suitable sequence from the view point of decreasing total strain energy stored by welding. 2) Mean Shrinkage These also exists a linear relation between mean shrinkage and logarithm of weight of deposited metal in multilayer welding as shown in Fgi. 4. The value of shrinkage may decrease by the application of block welding sequence.
