摘要：Landuse/landcoverisakeydriverofglobalenvironmentalchange.Ashiftinlanduseandlandcovercanalterthehumansettlementpatternsandothereconomicdevelopmentsandmayfinallyendupwithenvironmentaldegradation.ThepresentstudyappraisesthelanduseandlandcoverchangesinthemidlandpaddyfieldsofChathannoorPanchayath,Kerala,SouthIndiaoverthelasttwodecades(2002-2019).Thedigitizeddataanalysis,interpretation,mappingandlayoutpreparationweredoneinArcGIS10.3.Resultsofthestudyshowthemostdistinctivechangeslikethedecreaseinareaofpaddycultivationandelevationintheareaofothercrops.Thereductionintheareaofpaddyfieldsmainlyoccurredduringtheperiod2002to2009,withcorrespondingincreaseintheareaofothercrops.Theincreasingcostduetohikeinwagesoflabourersandtherelativepricechangesinfavourofcompetingcropswereresponsibleforthelesscultivationofpaddyfieldsinthestudyarea.Thepracticeofconversionofpaddylandsintocultivationwithothercropsaswellasfornon-agriculturalpurposeincreased.Stringentmeasuresshouldbeenactedtocontrolthesedrasticlandchangesinthestudyarea.Original Research Article .
