摘要:Compared to the work published so far, the authors show that the toponym has a high frequency and a wide distribution. At the beginning, the term meant common property (from the Slavic « obcina »), but over time it was distorted, gaining a mainly geomorphological meaning (elongated, soft, parallel tops, often playing the role of property limits). Finally, some clarifications are made regarding the common term and toponym in geographic regions. The pair of toponym and name obcina is found both in areas of folded sedimentary rocks (Carpathian and sub-Carpathian) and metamorphic and volcanic rocks, designating, everywhere, a “style” of relief: elongated, soft, generally low, parallel, separated by parallel valleys. The only region where the original, socio-economic meaning of the name has been retained is the Vrancea County, but it cannot be placed in the local toponomastics. In all the other regions only the more recent meaning derived from limeonym and geomorphonym has been kept.
