  • 摘要:Behavioral health has been a topic of great concern during the COVID-19 pandemic, with researchers and health providers exhibiting special concern for populations who are at-risk for mental health and substance use disorders. American veterans are one such group, as they already experience behavioral health disorders at disproportionate rates, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders (SUDs). To date, only a limited number of studies have evaluated the impact of the pandemic on the veteran population. The current study expands upon such work through a qualitative analysis of veterans’ experiences during the pandemic. We conducted 23 in-depth interviews with Post-9/11 veterans throughout the US via Zoom videoconferencing about their experiences with the pandemic. The findings show that veterans faced challenges during COVID-19, some of which are shared among those in general civilian populations, and others of which may be specific to veterans and servicemembers. In addition, some veterans have experienced exacerbated behavioral health concerns, such as increased substance use or mental health symptoms, while others have shown resilience and adaptation in the wake of collective, societal challenges. Our findings also point to the importance of providing resources and support to veteran and military populations during potentially distressing events.
