摘要:The use of social media in higher education has attracted attention from many researchers. In this paper the results of a study into the use of Facebook in two offerings of a large first year Information Systems course and one offering of a large second year Accounting Information Systems course are presented. The courses that were the subject of the study were offered during 2011 at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. This creates added context for the study of the major disruptions caused by the major earthquake on 22nd February of that year and significant snowfalls in August of that year. The results show that the decisions to use Facebook as an additional communication channel in these courses in the wake of the earthquake and snowfalls was justified, provided that joining the groups was not a mandatory requirement for enrolment in the courses.
