The Relative Age Effect on Participation of Soccer athletes in World Championships of the Under-17 and Under-20 Categories between 2011 and 2015. JEPonline 2019;22(3):136-144. The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of the relative age on soccer players of the national base teams that participated in the Under-17 (U-17) and Under-20 (U-20) World Championships promoted by FIFA from 2011 to 2015. The sample were composed by 3,021 athletes of the categories Under-17 (U-17; n = 1,509) and Under-20 (Under-20; n = 1,512) of 144 teams (U-17; n = 72 and U20; n = 72). The Chi-Square Test was performed taking as reference the equal distribution of the athletes by terms of 3 months each. The highest prevalence of athletes born in the first trimester was found in the U-17 (44%) and in the U-20 categories (36%) (P<0.00001). The findings indicated that the Relative Age Effect (RAE) was present in the selection of athletes for the U-17 and U-20 World Cups between 2011 and 2013.
