摘要:This study investigates the protective effects of Milk thistle seeds (Sifybum marianum) on fish health protection against the oxidative stress induced by the pesticide 4-hydroxycoumarin as an alternative to the conventional toxic treatments on the freshwater fish Tilapia zilli reared in recirculating aquaculture system (RAS).The lethal concentration 50 (LC50) of 4-hydroxycoumarin for the experimental fish was determined by immersion in the bath for 24 hours. The obtained value was 47.2 pg toxin /L.The fish health state was assessed by measuring the serum enzymes ALT,LDH,and GGT.Besides, stressed and non-stressed fish tissues were subjected to histopatholog-ical investigations. The results obtained showed a significant increase in ALT,LDH,and GGT activities of fishes exposed to stress compared to control. The histological and biomarker content studies showed the protective effect deriving from the use of S.marianum seeds as feed supplements to combat oxidative stress induced by 4-hydroxycoumarin exposure. The study provides evidence of the rationality of a potential alternative therapeutic method to the solution of contamination from the experimental toxin and in general from the influence of similar stressors on aquaculture species.
