摘要:Isabella Bird is an English woman born in 1831 anddied in 1904 in Edinburgh, Scotland, who travelledextensively all over the world except for South America, thereby publishing her travel accounts, which becamevery popular in England. She travelled in Japan in 1878for seven months from May to December, and her travelaccount was first published in a two-volume set in 1880by John Murray of London (Bird 1880), and also by G.P. Putnam’s Sons of New York using a slightly differentscheme for the content heading (Bird 1881). Five yearslater, she published an abridged version in a single vol-ume by John Murray (Bird 1885), which was reprintedin 1971. Subsequently, many different publishers reis-sued this single volume, during which misconceptionsand misunderstandings of the nature of her travel havebeen born, according to the author. He also pointed outinadequate Japanese translation of the abridged edition(Takanashi 1973), which along with some faulty transla-tions also spread misunderstanding among the Japanese. This was one of his motives to have started extensiveresearch on her account of her travels in Japan.
