摘要:Radioactive wastes will be produced at all stages of the nuclear fuel cycle. Low-level radioactive wastes (LLW, using the IAEA classification scheme) come fromvarious generating sources in this cycle – mainly as by-products obtained in thecourse of operation of nuclear reactors. Final disposal of LLW will be in securelandfills or in underground repositories at shallow or medium-depth. Some ILW –Intermediate-Level Radioactive Waste – with low content of radionuclides can alsobe contained in landfills while those with a certain higher level of radioactivity mayhave to be placed in medium-deep repositories.Waste containing long-lived radionuclides, and High-Level Waste (HLW), have tobe disposed at larger depth. Both represent a problem of considerable concern besetting most planners and operators of nuclear power generating plants. HLW isoften synonymous to Spent nuclear fuel, the final disposal of which is the main issueaddressed in the Special Issue.
