摘要:There are universities in Europe boasting 700 yearsof history, and even longer. The University of Warsawis not one of them. The town of Warsaw gained signif-icance in the seventeenth century, when the capital of thecountry was moved here, but this lasted only a littlemore than one century; in the XVIII Century Poland lostits independence. The town found itself in the Russianoccupation zone. There was a short-term release in theNapoleonic era followed by the relatively liberal attitudeof Russia in the first years of the return of her reign. Thissparked a revival of economic and educational initia-tives. One of the most important was the establishmentin 1816 of the Royal University of Warsaw.
