摘要:Along with other cognitive skills, language use often declines with age. However, one of the few positive aspectsof aging is the accumulation of experience-based knowledge, thought to be one of the foundations of wisdom. Thismay be why society holds both negative and positive stereotypes of aging. If productive language use declines withage despite the accrual of life experience, then the ability to pass on acquired wisdom is also likely to decline, andthis contributes to a devaluation of the speaker. The influence of linguistic competence on perceptions also hasimplications for social interaction with individuals with aphasia. We are currently investigating these issues byanalyzing language change in healthy aging, and the effect that change has on how the speakers are perceived.Future work will extend these analyses to perceptions of people with aphasia.
