  • 摘要:Considerable neurophysiological research has been conducted to explore the neural underpinning of semanticand syntactic processing in bilinguals by using various neuroimaging and electrophysiological techniques. However, the debate of the cortical organization of the two languages in bilinguals and in bilingual aphasics is still going on.The present study was carried out with the aim of investigating how multiple languages are processed in bilingualtypical and aphasic individuals. Event related brain potentials, specifically, P600 potentials were recorded from righthanded typical and Aphasic bilinguals during a sentence completion task involving silent reading. The participantsin the experiment were five Kannada - English typical bilinguals and five Kannada - English bilingual. Thebilinguals, highly proficient in both languages, had exposure to them since the age of 5 years. The participants read100 Kannada (50 correct & 50 syntactically incorrect) and 100 English (50 correct & 50 syntactically incorrect)sentences to compare the processing of the two languages within each group. The stimuli were words that wouldcomplete either a syntactically correct or syntactically incorrect sentence. The task consisted in deciding whether thesentences were well formed or not in terms of syntactic structures, giving the response by pressing a button. Thefindings revealed subtle differences in the latency and amplitude measures of various ERP components such as P600potentials in both the bilingual groups viz., typical as well as aphasics. The present paper highlights severalprocesses that are involved in the differences in processing of syntactic information in these two languages and theirimplications to the understanding of language processing in clinical populations bilingual aphasia.
