Waist-Height Ratio Increase is Associated with SedentaryBehavior in Adolescents Independent of the Level of PhysicalActivity. JEPonline 2018;21(4):54-65. The purpose of this study wasto investigate the association of sedentary behavior (SB) andphysical activity (PA) for the risk of central adiposity as assessed bythe waist/height ratio (WHtR). The study included 812 adolescentsbetween 10 and 17 yrs of age. Body mass index (BMI), BMI-z andWHtR were calculated. The SB time and the PA level were verifiedby questionnaire and recall of energy expenditure, respectively. Itwas found that regardless of the level of physical activity, teens whospent more time in sedentary activities had higher chances of beingclassified with high WHtR, revealing an increased risk of centralobesity in active (OR = 2.06; P=0.02) and insufficiently active (OR =3.21; P<0.0001). It is concluded that the low SB has a protectiveeffect and the high SB exposes the adolescents to a higherprobability of presenting high WHtR, independent of the level of PA.
