Relationship between the Percentage of 1RM and the Number of Repetitions for the Prescription of Strength Training Programs. JEPonline 2016;19:3:42-49. The purpose of the study was to investigate the number of repetitions per set at 80% of 1RM, considering different groups in gender, level of physical fitness, upper and lower limbs, exercises, equipment of different brands, age (adolescent and adult), and motivation. The sample consisted of 78 volunteers (36 men and 42 women) who underwent tests in six different types of exercises supervised by expert coaches. For each exercise, the 1RM test was conducted according to Kraemer et al. guidelines, then 80% of the 1RM load was calculated, and the maximum of correct repetitions was performed. The results do not agree with the findings reported in the literature. Therefore, we suggest caution in prescribing training programs that follow these parameters. One must consider some important variables to avoid underestimating or overestimating the relationship between % of 1RM and the number of repetitions.
