摘要：Spain’s colonial problem on the eve of the Cuban War of Independence was a deeply debated subject at the time in the Athenaeum of Madrid, like in Parliament. The author's argument is that, rather than sponsoring a scientific debate on the matter, the Athenaeum wanted to influence Spain’s public opinion and political élite of its own ideas on colonial reform.
