摘要：The racial question played a main role in the Cuban intellectuals’ conceptualization of their emergent nation after Independence. This article demonstrates that folklore played also a significant role in the definition of Cuban national identity by enhancing the heritage of the Afrocuban tradition. The institutional initiatives that were taken up in this regard are examined, as well as the contents of their most important publications and the prominent figure of Fernando Ortiz.
