摘要：An undergraduate laboratory experiment that can be used in Biochemistry, Toxicology and Microbiology courses to discuss the important effects of chemical compounds on metabolism is presented in this paper. The effects of pH and some metals (Hg, Mo and U) on ferrous ion oxidation by four Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans strains were investigated using respirometry techniques. The biological oxidation of Fe2+ by the four strains is in agreement with the Michaelis-Menten kinetic model. The experiment can be an important tool to introduce this subject, as well as in opening possible discussions about other issues.
