摘要:The title of this thesis is An Analysis of Settingon Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities. Thepurposes of this research are to describe thesetting of the story and to find out the relationof setting to the characters and plot. A Tale ofTwo Cities is a historical novel written byCharles Dickens. This novel expressesDickens’ concern about social problem inEngland, particularly about the poor. He alsoused the French Revolution to strengthen thestory and the characters. How Dickens told thestory of his historical novel motivates thewriter to do a research on it. This researchuses a qualitative descriptive method becauseit analyzes the setting and the relation ofsetting to the characters and plot which is inthe form of written words or verbal expressionfrom the characters. The writer uses a novelentitled A Tale of Two Cities as the primarysource of the data; the data themselves are thequotations of sentences that explain the settingof the story and the relation of setting to thecharacters and plot. The writer takessecondary data such as references from somelibraries and internet as well. The writer usesstructural approach to find out the results ofthis research which are the setting and therelation of setting to the characters and plot.She analyzes the three elements of setting inthe story, they are: place setting where thestory is located, time setting which describethe period of time when the story happens, andsocial setting which includes social status,manner, habits, custom, and tradition of thecharacters. She also analyzes how the settingrelated to the characters and plot. The writerfinds out that the setting of A Tale of TwoCities is located in London and Paris. Theperiod time of the story holds between years1757 to 1793. The social setting that includesthe social status, manner, habits, custom, andtradition of the characters is shown by themanner of Dr. Alexander Manette, SidneyCarton, and Madame Defarge. The relation ofsetting to the character and plot is shown bythe changing character of Dr. AlexanderManette because he always kept hisshoemaker’s bench and tools, meanwhile therelation of setting to the plot can be seen whena street named Saint Antoine is mentioned inthe story.
