摘要:On the whole, this thesis is discussing the moral values of the characters in thenovel Oliver Twist. The story itself was written and published in order toprotest the fatal flow from the Poor Law Amendment Act, or known as the NewPoor Law of 1834. In theory, the Laws should work for people in every socialclass and win over the poverty. But the result was far from expectation. Basedon Poor Law Report, the Laws encouraged the poor people to depend on charity, instead of searching for work. Dickens made the main character, Oliver Twist,to be one of the examples from people who were suffered from the impacts. Healso described the conditions of being poor such as; families who were tornapart because all of the family members had to earn some money all day long, including children who had to work in the workhouses, then stated that therewas nothing they, the poor people, could do to have a better life. However, thewriter only discusses one aim of the thesis; to explain the moral values impliedin the characters. In order to analyze them, the writer uses Jacques Thirouxstheories about approaches to the study of moral. The writer chooses the theorybecause she believes that there are many moral values from people in the storyOliver Twist, and they can change their judgments toward someone undercircumstances. The writer chooses qualitative method in order to find the moralvalues of the characters in the novel. As the result, the writer finds that thecharacters have both good and bad moral values. And the moral values are;Love and Devotion, Purity of the Heart, and a Belief in God. Keyword : MORAL, CHARACTERS, NOVEL
