  • 摘要:keyword: MORAL, VALUES, THE OLD MAN AND THE SEAABSTRACT :A novel is a fiction prose narrative or tale of considerable length which characters and action representative of the real life are portrayed in a plot moreor less complexity. It is very interesting if the story left moral values. Basicallymoral values can be found in the main character which is more discussed thanother characters. One of the examples is Santiago, the poor fisherman who isthe main character in The Old Man and the Sea. The writer has chosen The OldMan and the Sea as her material research because beside it has moral values inSantiagos characters, it was an immediate success throughout the world. Itwon the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and it was specifically cited when the NobelPrize for Literature was awarded to Hemingway in 1954. The writer analyzesthe moral values of Santiago by using the descriptive method. She collects thedata from many sources such as from The Old Man and the Seas novel, KajianWilayah Amerika (KWA) Library, Indonesian University Library, BritishCouncil Library, some reference books and Internet. She uses the moralapproach to find the moral messages behind the main character. She researchesSantiagos characters with the virtue theories of Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas.She does some steps for collecting the data. First, read the novel once or twice,underline the sentences of Santiagos characters and some statements related tothe moral values, try to find the supporting theories and compare with somereference books. In this research, the writer finds the Santiagos charactershave relationship with the Aristotles and Thomas Aquinass virtues. They arethe characters and have moral values. In short, through the Santiagoscharacters The Old Man and the Sea gives meaningful moral messages for thereaders.
