摘要：ii The English preposition is one of grammatical learning and it consists of someelements. Preposition by is part of them. The problem of this research is whatthe characteristics of English preposition by. The aim of this research is to findout the characteristics of English preposition by used in sentences that written inthe novel Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. The writer used a qualitative methodas the research method. As a result, the writer found 86 sentences that containpreposition by in the novel. There are 14 sentences that include in preposition oftime; 14 sentences that include in preposition of place; 4 sentences that includein preposition by+gerund; 37 sentences that include in preposition in by-phrase;1 sentence that include in preposition by with reflexive pronoun; 2 sentencesthat include in preposition by in the group specified. Beside that, preposition bycan be categorized into a prepositional phrase and as an idiom. There are 10sentences that include in prepositional phrase and 4 sentences that include inidiom.
