摘要:Although the payments system is vitally important for exchange, its interest among economists has fallen over the past fifty years. This has become especially apparent over the last decade, in the face of large-scale phenomena of innovation, such as the application of electronic technologies for the transmission of money, the emergence of new payment services and the rapid spread of commercial credit. While some reports in recent years have accumulated a large amount of statistical information on these phenomena, there are still considerable uncertainties about their future developments and their implications. The present work aims to integrate the literature with an analysis of the logical foundations of the payments system, in order to identify theoretical points of reference in order to interpret the empirical-institutional evidence contained in the official reports.
