摘要:The Royal Academy of History published a Dictionary of Geography which was considered to be a work representative of the concern of a group of Enlightened scholars about the knowledge of their own country. Only three volumes were finished: the first two in 1802 and a third one in 1845. In this paper, the author analyses how the idea was born, the difficulties to carry it out and why the idea failed. The creation of the dictionary is related to three circumstances: the history of the Academy, the influence of the «Encyclopedia» and the meaning and importance given to geographical kowledge.
