摘要:Located inside Rio de Janeiro's city limits, the Tijuca Forest is the product of a successful reforestation program applied to mountain slopes whose original vegetation had been destroyed by coffee cultivation at the beginning of the 19th century. From 1862 to 1887, Manoel Gomes Archer and Gastão de Escragnolle directed the planting of 95.000 trees representing dozens of different and mostly native species, with the purpose of re-establishing the flow of rivers which supplied drinking water to what was then the nation's capital. The Forest's survival under tremendous urban pressures has been in large part guaranteed by the rudimentary, original, and pioneering manner in which it was replanted.
