  • 摘要:Material Flow Accounting (MFA) is an analytical framework that examines the material base of the economies. Indicators on the physical dimension of the economy can be obtained by accounting the material coming into and leaving a socioeconomic system, Thus, MFA can be useful to measure the physical impact of an economy on the surrounding environment. This paper is twofold. On the one hand, it analyses the evolution of the biomass extraction and consumption in Mexico in the last thirty years by means of the MFA main indicators, underlying the main determinants of such evolution. On the other hand, it focuses on the biomass flows resulting from subsistence activities in Mexico, mainly on woodfuel extraction. Since the natural resources extracted for subsistence proposes are not sold and bought in markets, they are not thoroughly registered in the National Accounts and therefore omitted in the MFA. A total amount of biomass extracted directly by rural households was calculated for 2002 based on information provided by ENHRUM. It is shown then how the biophysical picture of an economy such as the Mexican one can change when information on subsistence activities is incorporated into the analysis.
