摘要:Based on a conjecture about the reasons that might have motivated Nepomuceno to be interested in the translation of Arnold Schoenberg´s book of Harmony, this paper reveals some progressive aspects seldom commented about the music of Nepomuceno who is recalled by History just as a forerunner of the Brazilian Nationalism. The analysis of Nepomuceno’s works previous to the edition of Schoenberg´s book reveals that his music already used in that period the characteristic elements of the progressive harmony, such as augmented chords, vagrant harmonies, suspended tonality, whole tone scales and complex ninth chords, which, according to Schoenberg’s treatise, would lead to the dissolution of tonality. Recognizing in the treatise the theoretical description of the materials he used might have caused Nepomuceno’s empathy. These data allow a new evaluation of the musical context in which appeared the Brazilian musical modernism, suggesting that there was in Rio de Janeiro, in the beginning of the twenties, a dissemination of advanced musical knowledge that facilitated the uprising of the modernistic movement.
